Japan's KDDI Selects LTE Core as Next-Generation Mobile Broadband Solution from Hitachi and Nortel

Wireless LAN Tips From Iraq. Networking Joint Base Balad

When Babylon Telecommunications won the wireless networking contract for Joint Base Balad in Iraq, the company took on a lot more than a WLAN plumbing job. For many soldiers stationed there, the wireless access would vastly improve how they kept in touch with family and friends back home and kept informed about what was happening in the world.

"Prior to us providing services there, the official way to do it was an Internet café," said Lucas Catranis, president and CTO of project integrator Babylon Telecommunications, who has overseen the project from the United States. "You wait hours to get on a virus- and spyware-infested Internet café, and then you send email or Skype for 15 minutes, 30 if you're lucky."

Joint Base Balad, also known as Camp Anaconda, is home to more than 30,000 people from the U.S. Army, Air Force, and private contractors, and the base serves as the central logistical hub for U.S. forces in Iraq.

The base, one of Iraq's largest at 25 square kilometers, is also home to the second busiest airport in the world.

"I would classify this deployment as fairly unique," said Dave Logan, general manager of federal solutions at Aruba Networks Inc., the vendor Babylon worked with on the project. "This is the largest pure outdoor deployment I'm aware of."

Prior to the WLAN deployment, many base residents took it on themselves to set up unauthorized access points hooked up to costly personal satellite connections. But those were officially prohibited for security reasons: One nasty Trojan could quickly spread from personal PC to personal PC, and even potentially jump onto military equipment.

So the armed forces sought bids from contractors to outfit Joint Base Balad, and other semi-permanent bases like it, with the outdoor wireless infrastructure needed to give Internet access to the thousands of troops living on the base from the relative comfort of their barracks

For Babylon, the Joint Base Balad assignment was the biggest single-site deployment it had undertaken to date, with a number of challenging obstacles. The heat and sand, naturally, played havoc with outdoor access points, and radio planning was made trickier because the base's airport cannot allow any wireless interference in that area.

But some of the hardest problems, Catranis said, were logistical. Getting the right equipment shipped could take weeks, and even after it arrived on base, the local postal system could hold onto packages for days pending inspection.

Planning was further complicated because there was no consistent, standard power source: Different outlets supply different currency levels and use different connectors, depending on the country of origin.

To navigate the natural and man-made hazards, Babylon worked with Aruba to plan a mesh-AP system that would cover all of Joint Base Balad's living areas while leaving sensitive zones free of radio interference.

Aruba's deployment simplicity did not hurt either, said Catranis. Using "thin" APs and a mesh-network design, Babylon created a WLAN by layering more access points with smaller coverage areas, reducing the complexity of planning and supporting a denser network of users.

"The thin access point concept was something that was a real seller for us," he said. "Not having to configure individual access points, and then just having everything work well together … is a big competitive advantage."

At Joint Base Balad, many of the problems facing Babylon would be quite familiar to anyone deploying a WLAN, even if the circumstances were a bit more extreme. Catranis offers some advice to those facing similar situations.

  • Know your people: "It helps to know the people that are on base with you," he said. That means knowing the people working for you, but also the ones you will be working with -- whether they are Air Force site inspection or the bean counters in accounting that need to approve your budget.

For Babylon, some of the more important relationships were with the private contractors and the inspection units. Catranis said both had to approve any devices brought in and deployed in their respective areas. It pays to make sure you receive that approval before shipping electronics halfway around the world.
  • Know your resources: "It helps to know what resources you have on-site and what you need to get from your back office," said Catranis. That includes the services you have – for Babylon, a good VoIP provider is key to keeping all the global offices connected – as well as the hardware. While it can take weeks for a new switch to make its way from the states, even a more mundane deployment shouldn't be slowed because somebody forgot to check if you have enough Ethernet cabling lying around. Part of the secret is to keep people talking.

"The most important thing is maintaining daily communication between your offices for logistical purposes," said Catranis. While nobody likes endless meetings, clear lines of communication and status-checking means problems are rooted out before they become showstoppers.
  • Set clear goals: Finally, Babylon approached the project with clear goals of what they would – and would not – accomplish. Given the base's limited satellite connectivity (currently 256 Kbit/sec download and 128 Kbit/sec up), VoIP calls and streaming video are largely out. Instead, the network is optimized to support the basics.

"There's really only so much you can do on such limited bandwidth," he said. "It's more important to us to make sure people have email and Web browsing." For those who need to make calls, a separate pay phone network exists, although Babylon is looking to create a separately tiered Wi-Fi network designed to specifically support VoIP calling.

How can I see other computers connected to my wireless network?

Just because you have a wireless network, it doesn’t mean that you can automatically “see” the other computers on it. First, computers must be set up in such a way so that they are visible to others on the network. In addition, the wireless profile that the computer is using may be set to hide the computer from view to others on the network, particularly if the computer is using a public wireless hotspot.

First, if you want to make all of the computers on your home network visible to each other, you will need to go into the Network and Sharing Center and make a few adjustments. First, make sure that Network Discovery is turned on. This option makes sure that you can see other computers on the network and that other computers can see your computer on the network. In addition, it allows you to access the shared resources of other computers.

If Network Discovery is turned on, click on the “View computers and devices” link under Tasks to see if you can see the other computers. You may need to turn on Network Discovery for the other computers as well.

Still can’t see the computers on your network? Check to see what “Network Location” the various computers are using. For example, if one of the computers on your network location is set to “public,” then you will not be able to see it. This is by design. After all, if you are at a public Wi-Fi hotspot such as a library or coffee house, would you want everyone else using the hotspot to be able to see your computer and explore its files?

You can double check what network location you are using by opening Windows Firewall which will display this information. To change the network location, go back into the Network and Sharing Center and click the link labeled “Customize.” Click either Public or Private depending on your security needs at the time.

Once you have set up all computers with the correct Network Discovery and network locations, you should now be able to see the other computers on the network. Other settings to consider are whether or not to use public folders on the network and if you want to allow the other computers to browse the files of the hard drive. A good compromise involves sharing your files only to users who have a user account and password.

Panasonic Taps Qualcomm Gobi for Broadband Data

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Having scored another important win for its Gobi broadband wireless access technology through a deal with Dell Computer, Qualcomm Inc. said Panasonic also has agreed to use Gobi in at least three families of Toughbook ruggedized notebooks, and will continue to evaluate follow-on versions of Gobi that add WiMax or Long-Term Evolution support.

The Gobi broadband access chip set currently supports EV-DO and HSPA networks, and has added firmware to support HSPA+ and Global Positioning System capabilities. Victoria Obenshain, director of wireless strategy at Panasonic, said one reason for beginning rollouts with the fully ruggedized CF series, which will offer Gobi this fall, is that "first-responder users of the fully ruggedized version are those that are most likely to have to contend with multiple networks.

"This will migrate to the business community at large, but we could see that police and fire in emergencies, as well as the military, were the ones most likely to need multiple services," she added.

Mike Concannon, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm's CDMA Technologies unit, said Gobi capabilities represent the emergence of software-defined radio (SDR) features in laptops. With special Carrier Selection Application software Panasonic is bundling with the Toughbook, SDR features become virtually transparent to users, he predicted.

Previously, Obenshain said, Panasonic relied on single-air interface modules from vendors such as Sierra Wireless and Novatel to support a single packet-data wireless standard. Gobi represents the first time the company will support multiple networks with a single chip set and a unified software development kit. Concannon said Qualcomm does not see Sierra Wireless or Novatel as competitors; in fact, several module specialists are interested in integrating Gobi into single-card communication modules for after-market notebook sales.

Obenshain said Panasonic is considering several ways to use the GPS services within Gobi " and not just in traditional location-based services, but in tracking lost or stolen laptops and in developing time-stamp functions.

The Toughbook line is designed not just for rugged use, but with multiple layers of security for government and highly-secure enterprise applications. The CF-19 and CF-30 Toughbooks with Gobi will debut in October. Enterprise level Business Rugged platforms, weighing 4.5 pounds, will debut in November. The U-1 Ultra-Mobile Rugged system with Gobi will launch in the first quarter of 2009.

Networking distributors React Technologies and Rocom have ramped up their reseller retention efforts by offering to send high-spending partners on exotic shindigs.

Wireless specialist React is offering adventurous VARs the chance to take part in its Motorbike Adventure tour around India in March of next year. Any reseller purchasing more than £150,000 worth of networking kit from the Aruba partner between July and December will qualify for the two-week, 2,000 mile jaunt.

The tour will start in Mumbai and head northeast, passing through the cities of Madhya Pradeshs, Bhopal, Jhansi and Agra – home of the Taj Mahal. After passing through capital city New Delhi the tour will explore the Thar Desert and finish by heading along India's west coast, through Surat and Daman and finishing back in Mumbai.

Meanwhile comms outfit Rocom is offering any resellers to achieve their sales targets this year a five star tip to South Africa in October. VARs will enjoy a three-night stay at a luxury hotel close to Cape Town and Table Mountain National Park.

The distributor's vendor partners BT, Panasonic, Plantronics, Nortel, Aastra, Avaya, BTIPS and Cable & Wireless will all be sending representatives and Rocom managing director Richard Carter claimed the trip offered a good chance to strengthen channel ties.

“The trip is a thank you to our resellers for their continuous business and loyalty throughout 2008," he said. "This incentive will give us the opportunity to get to know our resellers and suppliers better, and as a result, enable us to further improve our support to them.”

Islanders complain £60,000 web access 'is a waste of money'

Slanders say they are being "railroaded" into accepting a controversial internet connection system they claim is unsuitable and unwanted.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) announced yesterday that publicly-funded broadband access was being made available to residents on Barra.

But islanders claim the money would be better spent upgrading telephone exchanges for BT to provide cheaper and faster internet services.

They are now considering a complaint to the European Parliament and have already sent 1,000 letters of complaint and a 400-name petition to HIE, MPs, the Office of Fair Trading and the Scottish Government.

Northbay on Barra is to be provided with wireless broadband access through an extension of the Connected Communities (ConCom) network, which is already providing 951 households across the Outer Hebrides.

Campaigners say connection speeds are slower than those through the phone line, and they would rather wait for an exchange upgrade.

ConCom is backed by HIE, Western Isles Council and NHS Western Isles and receives funding from the European Union.

Because the islands are remote from main internet connections and their populations dispersed, more traditional methods of providing broadband, such as cable, are considered impractical. Instead, wireless facilities are being used.

The ConCom project, which also includes services to schools and offices, has cost £6.5 million, including about £60,000 for the extension to two sites in Northbay.

HIE said yesterday that it compared the merits of procuring an ADSL upgrade for the local telephone exchange – which would run into six figures – with extending the ConCom wireless network.

Sandy Cumming, HIE's chief executive, said:

"I'm aware that broadband connection has prompted a lot of debate in Northbay and the options have been closely examined for their relative merits and limitations. This decision is supported by the local authority and the Scottish Government."

Alasdair Allan, the Western Isles MSP, welcomed the Northbay extension,

and island councillor Donald Manford said ConCom was the only option at present.

But Neil MacNeil, an island resident, said there is "anger and disbelief" that a petition signed by more than 90 per cent of island households was ignored.

Is it time for ubiquitous Wi-Fi?

At the beginning of the each year, I get out my crystal ball and prognosticate on what to expect in the networking and security industries. On the networking side, I predicted that 2008 would be a banner year for the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11n. To geek out a bit, the current standard is 802.11g with maximum throughput of 54 megabits per second. In comparison, 802.11n bolsters performance all the way to 248 megabits per second.

So how accurate was my prediction? Judging by the Interop meetings I attended last week with Enterprise Strategy Group networking stud Bob Laliberte, spot on. Aruba Networks, Cisco, Meru, and Trapeze are shipping products and closing big deals. Large universities are installing thousands of new wireless access points providing network access to students and faculty across large geographic campuses. Hospitals are embracing wireless networking for user authentication, network access, and asset tracking. In fact, one of the most intriguing things about this market is that it seems to be driven by business applications rather than technology refresh. Manufacturing companies, insurance agencies, government bureaus, and defense agencies are all using wireless for brand new business processes. Pretty cool stuff.

Sure, there are a lot of players in this market, and there is bound to be consolidation. I can certainly see Foundry, Juniper, Hewlett-Packard, or Nortel acquiring someone, especially in the current financial climate in which companies are undervalued. In my view, this would be a worthwhile move for any of these industry leaders. Juniper would enjoy significant benefits from an acquisition as Wi-Fi could certainly complement its recent introduction of edge-to-core Ethernet switches.

Turntables and cassettes are completely foreign to my 10- and 13-year-old sons. Before my guys hit the workforce, wired Ethernet and the venerable RJ-45 Ethernet jack may slide into a similar nostalgic category.
