WeFi Launches Huge Directory of Wi-Fi Hotspots

WeFiOpen Wi-Fi network WeFi doesn’t shy from using social media and web services for promotion; they launched a Twitter mashup and a Facebook application last year.

Now, they have a free directory up with over one million Wi-Fi hotspots, available over at wefi.com. An online directory is nice, but much more important is the phone version of the service; if you’re in the United States, text 4WEFI (49334) with your location and you’ll receive a listing of Wi-Fi hotspots nearby within a couple minutes. WeFi’s community can also contribute to the directory either manually or via the free software available over at wefi.com; if you have a GPS device installed on your phone or computer, new hotspots can be located automatically.

WeFi*Update: well, we tried texting the service for a listing of nearby Wi-Fi sites, and waited a while to get a response, and the response was this: “WiFi locations found. Text YES to receive, you will be charged $.50 plus standard messaging charges apply. Text STOP to end. HELP for more info.” So, the SMS version of the service isn’t really free as I initially thought - and it was way too slow for actual use.
