Written by Anonymous on 1:30 AM

I have a laptop and I have some internet card connected to it. but the internt itgives out is bad... Ive been using some wireless network that I guess is around my house.. When Ive been using that, ive been accesing my bank account and also bought many things online incuding a $1000 airplane ticket.. My friend told me that Itsnot good to use wireles network, because the owner of that can see the website ive been to and probabl get the credit cardinfo or my bank account number.. Is this true??

.... Ive heard there are these log files that are saved?? is the bankwebsite and my password stored there?? and also the travel website I used to buy the airplane ticket and the cedit card numbers?

Errrrr... Is it your household internet or are you accessing someone else's internet wirelessly?

If it is your internet and wireless router then follow the manufactuers instructions to make it secure. You probably need a Wireless Encryption Key.

If on the other hand its not your's then why are you using it?

"Ive been using some wireless network that I guess is around my house" - you've been connecting to someone elses unsecured wireless access point?

Firstly, you shouldn't be doing that anyway, it's illegal in most places.

The owner of that access point wont be able to see where you've been unless they were monitoring the connection to you at the time or have specific logging in place. Routers don't usually log destination details. Similarly, they wouldn't have access to whatever details you entered unless they were actively monitoring the connection at the time, which I doubt very much otherwise they probably would have cut you off when they first noticed it happening.

Your own temporary internet files and browsing history will show where you've been but they are on your machine not the router and wouldn't contain the content entered into the form anyway unless the site has been very badly written.

Stick to your own connection from now on.

Not unless they were actively monitoring the connection, which I doubt very much.

If you are using a wireless laptop and are searching for networks then it will search and fin any networks in your area regardless of who's it is. If there was free internet available then nobody would have to fork out for an ISP like you or your parents do for you!

The one you have been using is obviously not secure, which why you have been able to use it but as said above, just stick to using your own from now on

    Excuse me? Have you?

fred, unless they were monitoring the traffic between their access point and your connection when you were entering the data into the site then no, they will have no record of the details you were putting in.

Their router logs may show that a machine that is not theirs (if they checked) had been connected to their network but not what data was sent to/from it. The fact that they are operating an unsecured network would make me think that they know very little about wireless access in the first place so probably even less about router logs and monitoring traffic etc.

I.e. if you don't connect to them again then they will never be aware that anyone did connect in the first place. Don't worry.Smile
